I agree.

A huge part of that "BTMI live sound" was all the sweaty hugs and screamy dudes.

My wife's friend lives out in Vegas, and she's asked us to be the godparents to her daughter. We're pretty stoked, and looking forward to going out there for the baptism.

That said, they asked us at like...literally the worst time. We already had a whole vacation booked (that kind of rocked our savings), and now we're supposed to be going out there right as I finish up my job, and 2 1/2 months before I start my next one.

It's cool, we can make it work; we're just a little broke.

Long story short, I'm looking for cool places to stay and cool shit to do, on the cheap. I've never been there, so I'm stoked to really experience Vegas, I just want to see the super good shit, and not to waste my time at garbage/trashy shit.

tl;dr : how do I book a cool Vegas vacation on the cheap?

It's the exact same as going into, say, Avengers 1 and we know for sure they're going to defeat Loki, but they don't know that so we still get to watch them struggle and act as if they might lose.

I like this point a bunch.

Likewise, I've had this conversation a ton lately, and I feel a little love handshakey being like "well i mean, comics fans have been dealing with this for...ever."

That said, it's been funny watching superhero movies over my lifetime play out like a mini history of superhero comics.

  • Back in the late 80s and early 90s, you have Reeves Superman and Keaton's Batman, that are pretty analog in terms of reception to the first ever superhero comics. Kids loved them, but they were never really respected as "real art".
  • Then you go through a long stretch where the medium isnt selling, and almost completely goes under.
  • Then though, somebody comes out with a dark/gritty version of Batman and everyone is like "oh man...maybe it's ok for adults to enjoy these too"
  • Shockwaves echo through the industry. DC tries to keep doing dark and gritty, but Marvel realizes that there are actually just fun and accessible stories to be told through these characters they've had sitting around for a long ass time.
  • Everyone loves them.
  • People start going "ok yeah, I like this...but it's feeling redundant. The market is saturated and I'm getting sick of"
  • DC keeps making really fucking awful stuff and fails to ever really recapture their glory days.
  • Both companies start doing enormous crossover events to get people really excited.
  • Marvel's are pretty successful, DCs sort of flop
  • Both companies kill off major characters and everyone complains that they know there's a zero percent chance they aren't coming back.

Also, regarding Lost in Space, that show is absolutely gorgeous, and also completely soulless.

Like, it seriously looks better than some of the big budget studio movies coming out right now, so I wanted to like it so much. After watching the pilot though, it's just completely devoid of fun or emotion or humor.

It's completely joyless.

But yeah, I dug Infinity War.

Without going too far into it, a lot of people are kind of rolling their eyes at the ending, but like, what did you expect? It would be literally impossible to pull off any sort of legit surprise with contracts and TMZ coverage or whatever. It's like an actual comic book event.

Yeah, I know Spider Man will be back in a year, but I also know there's not an explosives expert raccoon running around in space with Chris Pratt. It's called "suspended disbelief" ya nerds.

This fucking band.

I bought two tickets to this show right away, figuring that there was maybe a 40% chance I could go, but if nothing else, there was no way I couldn't sell them for at least face value.

Then they announced that secret show, and the market for them got saturated with people trying to sell off their originals.

So, I made a stubhub account to sell them off, except that it was connected to my Facebook, which goes to an email I don't have access to, so I had to log into stubhub to see if they actually sold. Only, at work, facebook is blocked, so I could only log in at home.

I checked last night and sure enough, they had sold, and had to be shipped no later than yesterday.

I don't own a printer, so I went to the library to print them out. Turns out, I had outstanding library fines, so I couldn't use their computers.

Paid my library fines.

Got back to the computer, hit print, go over to the printer...it costs 60 cents, and I don't have change.

Walked home, grabbed change, drove back over.

Got the shit printed, but now it's after 5:00, so I have to drive 20 minutes to the one post office that's open till 6:00. Whatever.

Get there, wait in line...lady behind the counter tells me the shipping labels I have are for UPS.

The UPS store is like 3 minutes from my house.

tl;dr : I spent 2 hours yesterday driving around to sell my Keasbey Nights play through tickets for less than face value.

How was the transition to Keto, rorshach?

Honestly, pretty easy.

I had tried doing paleo for years and it always went alright, but there were certain times when I felt like I just didn't have any other option but to "cheat". I would be at a bar with my friends, or forget my lunch at work, or just feel too lazy to cook, and I would be like "ah damn, no clean, low fat, high protein, high fiber options around...I guess I have to do pizza..."

On keto though, you don't really have to care about how "natural" food is, or whatever; you'e just shooting for fat and protein with as few carbs as possible.

So I can go out to a bar and eat hot wings with blue cheese and a whiskey soda (or a miller lite even), and I can forget my lunch and get a double quarter pounder with cheese (no bun, no ketchup, add mac sauce), and I can get all sorts of takeout when I don't feel like cooking.

I honestly don't even know if I'm ever really "in ketosis" or whatever...or if eating fat just fills me up with way fewer calories, and is satisfying enough that it keeps me from wanting to break that streak. Either way though, I really dig it.

I did a 4 day water fast and it was ok. I just drank water for 4 days. Day 3-4 was full of explosive diarrhea water shits. Every fart was a lie. It has something to do with your body still producing bile in your gallbladder, even though there's no food to help digest. So yeah, you just expel it all. The positives are that I did drop a good amount of weight, although a lot of that is superficial. I think I might do it again, but I'm going to do a week of long distance cardio so I'll be intermittent fasting at best. I'm not sure if I have body dysmorphia. I'm down from 190.2 to 174.0 in 46 days. I think my obsession is more related to my OCD. I'm always tracking metrics for something and while I'm deployed it's really all there is to do. I just work out, diet, and try to save cash.

I'm going to Hawaii for the first time in July. Any advice?

I've been losing a good amount of weight on keto/IF for the past 6 months or so (though, i basically took the whole month of December off). I'm down about 35 pounds from where I started.

190-174 in 6 1/2ish weeks is like 2.4 pounds a week, which is definitely the "rapid weight loss" that some doctors/dietitians consider unhealthy. Then again, a good 5-6 pounds of that is probably water weight that would pack back on if you ate a little junk food, in which case you've really lost like, less than a pound and a half a week, which isn't so bad.

Bottom line, I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to be healthier, so long as doing so makes you feel better, and not worse. Like, if dropping 10-16 pounds makes you go "yeah, this is a healthier bmi range, I'm really proud of myself", then cool...if it makes you go "fuck, I lost all this weight and I still think I look like shit", then that's a problem.

I watched about half the first episode but didn't dig it.

Does it get better/different or is it just not gonna be for me? I keep seeing it be recommended, and specifically recommended for someone who's into the things I'm into.

It's one of my favorite shows on TV.

I think it loses people because at first shrug, its a "basic white-girl show", and sort of comes off as "the gilmore girls but with singing". As it goes on though, you realize that its really a satire of that sort of show.

It's sort of a "rom com" in the same sense that Community was a "sitcom".

All the stuff that makes you roll your eyes at and go "that's a super unhealthy representation of relationships", eventually gets addressed, and it gets pretty dark as they explore the impact of that kind of shit on people (changing themselves to try and be more compatible with their significant others, setting relationship conditions and ultimatums, obsessing over their partner at the expense of their own well being, etc).

It also seriously becomes one of the best representations of mental illness I've ever seen on television.

So that said, I think it rules, but also...

In other news, I've become more of a fan of Black Mirror since they started to move away from having every episode be a depressing lecture about the evils of society.

...I love the uber dark/depressing side of Black Mirror.

It's what made it one of my favorite shows. I haven't caught up on the newest season yet, but I keep hearing it's a little more optimistic, and that has me sort of put off.

I get $300 cash flow on 1 and about $500 on the other. $800 extra a month sounds great! But if one thing breaks, or it goes vacant for a month or two, your profits are gone.

Thain can correct me if I'm wrong, but I read this to mean "profit".

As in, (hypothetically) like a $1,200 mortgage, that he rents for $1,500 a month, turning him a $300 a month profit, while the house also pays for itself.

If I'm wrong about that, then yeah, that's pretty nuts. I live in the burbs and pay several times that for half a house.
