So my girlfriend signed up to run this half marathon in March in NYC. I don't really feel like training for a half marathon right now because I'm lazy. It's $65 if i register for it tonight, tomorrow it goes up to $75. Should i do it? Make my decision for me cause I'm bad at making decisions.

Whether you finish it or not you probably get a t-shirt, so go for it.

I used to be a distance runner, I ran cross country in Middle and High School but stopped Junior year cause I was sick of practicing every day. In hind sight I probably should have kept up with it cause I was a pretty fast runner. Maybe I could have gotten something out of it. Oh well.

same story for me. but believe me you can get back into it a lot faster than you think. i started to run daily over this summer (got up to 4 miles) and at first it sucked but i got back into the groove of it really quickly. i've started smoking since running in high school so that was honestly the biggest challenge, but i stopped smoking for about a month just for the running. a half marathon is definitely a daunting task, but with running, i always found it helpful to think that at least it's not (for this instance... but that's not to say i've ever ran this far in any race) a full marathon. you can do it. you have months to train. just run as far as you comfortably can each day. it doesn't take an insane training regiment. running is good in every single way. YEAH.

- consistency is key.. get into a routine and stick to it. start with four days a week and build to six within the first three or five weeks.
- don't do too much too soon, meaning, don't start out running six miles a day if you haven't run a step a years. start with two or three and build from there as you feel ready to go longer (i usually add five to seven minutes a week, but sometimes it's 10 days or two weeks before i feel ready to go up).
- push ups, start with two or three sets of 15 and build up to 30 or 35. might sound weird, but it makes a huge difference for me. between sets you'd might as well do some crunches, right?
- might as well do regular core work too. look up the "myrtl routine" on the youtube, it takes like 10-15 minutes to do.

this whole post probably just reeks of effort.

yesterday, i read about this experiment that suggested regular aerobic exercise could increase the volume of your anterior hippocampus. i'm definitely going to start jogging now. It seems like the cheapest and most legit way to stay sharp, unlike this stuff: https://www.proceraavh.com/

That's really all you need to know. I'm signed up for my first full marathon in May, which I'm super excited for.

Also forgot to add under the "don't do too much too soon" heading:
- don't run too hard. reebok shoes suck, but they had an add campaign that said "run at the speed of talking", which is pretty spot on. if you're running too hard to have a relatively normal conversation, slow down because you're running too hard.
and
- get a decent pair of running shoes from a running store.
