My Macbook from early 2007 is functional, but I'm not sure for how long. Any suggestions? I've been looking at ultrabooks, the non-retina Macbook Pro, and potentially a Mac Mini.

I have a mini, a non-retina MBP (late 2011 model) and a windows laptop. The only one I really use at this point is the MBP. If you don't care about refurbs, get one of the 2011 ones refurb from Apple, get Applecare on it, and call it good.

That's actually what I'm leaning towards, I can get the i7 model for $1300 after tax, and spending an additional $80, I can get 16gb of RAM.
Do you any opinions about i5 vs. i7? I do some Photoshop work as well as some stuff in Matlab, so I figure that memory is more important than the processor, but I want to get the maximum longevity out of it(main reason the retina 13 isn't appealing to me at all).

i5 vs i7 is basically irrelevant, but if you're looking at that kind of discount, just spec out a super nice laptop and enjoy it for 4 or 5 years. Wezzul's advice about refurbished stuff is good too.

Edit: Solid state drives are really incredible and you should make sure to get one if you're interested in both longevity and performance. Get a 128GB SSD and a 2TB external and you're set for space for a long time.

Recommending SSD to someone looking for longevity is a bad idea.

If I got the MBP, I would wait to get an SSD for a couple of years until prices got cheap enough where I wouldn't worry about limited write cycles. All of my important stuff is backed up in several places.

I need something portable that's easily transportable in a back pack, building it wouldn't be that great of an option.
It's all about the Pentiums baby.

I just bought a Retina MBP today ......its awesome.

I needed the SSD for my thesis work.

Only issue is it runs quite warm, especially during just downloads.

13 or 15 inch? I can't justify the price differential and lack of upgradability. Also, you HAVE to buy Applcecare with these, so the absolute I could get one for, even after the student discount, is 2k.

the retina macbooks are (allegedly) just a stop-gap to keep the apple fanboys interested until the "next big wave" of macbooks... so I would hold off on dropping a bunch of money getting a retina display, seeing as how either way it's going to be equally* obsolete in a short amount of time

*of course, it won't REALLY be obsolete, just as obsolete as these things get... point being, neither will be more valuable than the other soon.

Also, while European women aren't usually fat, most smoke, which is a huge turnoff for me personally. But really, what the fuck...it's just a one night stand anyways, so who cares at that point.

But it actually will be obsolete, after the warranty is up, and if your Applecare is up and something goes wrong, you're fucked. Those things are nigh impossible for most people to repair, and if you can find someone who can do it, they'll charge an arm and a leg.

Also, I feel the need to talk about the 2 different factions among Apple fanboys, the people who have been using Apple for years and want high end stuff(5%), and most of the youth today who want something simple and stylish(95%). The old timers really want a new Mac Pro.

SSDs are really really great, and by the time your SSD has trouble (if it does), you can buy a replacement on the cheap.

SSDs are seriously the best upgrade you can do on a computer at this time. Processors really don't help shit for most things.

Macbook Air 13 will blow your mind.

I would recommend a Thinkpad as an alternative, but after using Apple trackpads, I can't go back to windows laptop trackpads.

I'm not opposed to an SSD, just the idea of buying one from Apple. If I got a Pro, I could always take out the optical drive and add an SSD for the the os and things on hand, and keep the regular harddrive for general storage. I've heard a lot of good things about the Air, but if I get one, I've been told that it would be worth it to wait until the Haswell models drops in the summer.

F Mac and all they stand for

get a PC with the same specs and power for half the price; or better yet, build an epic kickass PC yourself for 1/3 the price

I can't build an ultrabook, the soldering skills are beyond my electrical engineering skills. In terms of laptops, your statement was true about 7 years ago, but they closed that gap. I live in Silicon Valley, and most engineers have Macbook Pros, even though they predominantly run windows. I'm not building it to game, which would be the only reason I don't build a full tower rig.

That being said, I do want to build a computer one day with this case

http://thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?C=1...mp;ID=2139#Tab2

it's $1000, but it's gorgeous.
