So I'm going to India for 2 weeks in June. We're going to New Delhi for 3 days, then to Chennai for rest of the time with a 3 day trip to Kerala at either a beach or lake resort. One of the friends I'm going with has family in Chennai. We won't be staying with them, but we'll be staying nearby, which is nice.

I've never been outside of America so I know everything we do will be exciting and fresh, but would do you recommend? We have some stuff planned, but I was wondering what you think. Also, what kind of prep would you recommend? either mental or whatever. Thanks in advance everyone.

India in June, ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY OR JUST ENJOY TORTURING YOURSELF?

It's going to be hot.
Drink plenty of Frooti and Thums Up.

why wouldn't I want bottled water? orange juice and soda doesn't sound like an ideal drink in >100 degrees. are those drinks like gatorade?

Don't trust bottled water in India.

Depends where you get it, some places fill up old bottles with potentially dirty water, just better to all around avoid it and drink chai or soda.

is there a proper way to prepare my stomach, or is at least one day of nauseousness imminent?

Just make sure everything you consume is cooked and that the liquids are sealed.

Alright. I went to india last year.

You want to take about a week of doxycycline before you go. and then you want to take about a month of doxycycline after you get back. and you want to take doxycycline the entire time you are over there.

In india, Malaria is resistant to chloroquine. so under no circumstances should you take chloroquine to try and prevent your possible malaria infection. Your doctor, of course, should have told you all that. It doesn't hurt to get a typhoid vaccincation as well, they are available in pill form. I would also soak all of the clothes that I am taking over there in permetherin, its available at camping stores.

Make sure that you check the tops of each bottle when you are over there before you buy it. Not often, but sometimes shop owners will offer you bottled water that is old bottles refilled with tap water (or well water, which is sort of like rural india's version of tap water, and where you are more likely to see this going on). It would not hurt to have a zerowater water bottle with you as well. If you use a zero water filter and then boil the water, you have a less chance of getting a bacterial imbalance in your stomach. Bis is a type of bottling certification over there. If you find yourself in strange areas, purchasing a bis certified bottle of water is probably your best bet.

I recommend getting a sprint mobile phone, maybe one on their prepaid plan, because sprint plans have free international texting. Sim cards are super hard to come by in india, good luck with that one.

Street vendors offer amazing food. You're gonna wanna avoid anything with paneer in it. You can find foods made on the street with purified water (so if your host can read the local language, don't be afraid to get some bani puri from a buy using purified water). I'd hit up a pan bar, if you get the chance (i was in a dry state, don't know how their real bars are). And there are these cool ass little cigarettes made from local tobacco leaves called bidis. If you're in on tobacco like that, I'd recommend giving them a shot. Masala sodas are tasty as well.

Pharmacies will sometimes dispense drugs that are controlled without prescriptions over there. you can always ask them to sell you some codeine, or some other drug, my buddy just stuck to codeine, though, so I don't know what else you might try. They may say no, but they may say yes as well. Again, your odds of encountering this increase in the rural areas.

Unfortunately, though, I was in gujarat and maharashtra, not any places you are going to go to, so I can't recommend specifics. However, you should be able to find copious drugs in kerala, I believe.

You should prep going with the idea that there are going to be rolling blackouts all across the city. Its gonna be hot and shitty (both literally AND figuratively, ha ha). don't do stuff during the middle of the day. I'd bring a portable phone charger, and some tabletop board games if I were going with you.

Other than that, get a thums up while you are over there, and don't be afraid to go into some of the hindi temples. they're usually pretty awesome. If you get a chance to go to any dawoodi muslim shrines, those are also super dope as well. but unless you know someone who is in the dawoodi sect, I doubt it is a possibility.

----------------------

I'll leave you with this advice from some other travelers that was passed to me. I don't recommend getting sick over in india (this advice applies to bacterial imbalances in your stomach, not malaria, btw). But if you want to, you have the option to go over there and get sick early, to let your gut biome correct itself early in the trip, and then enjoy the rest of your trip eating whatever the fuck you want. Again, not what I did, nor what I recommend, but some people suggest its the best way to visit india.

Toomine's drug vocabulary was intimidating. Like oh hey, you're going to another country? Specific to that region you should pump yourself full of this drug
